Resume Tips for High School Students

A resume is often the first contact with a employer so it needs to give a positive, professional impression. Employers are often contacted by many applicants so they want to know exactly how you can be useful to them without excessive or unrelated details. Your resume focuses on employer’s needs, not yours. Many say that if you have not presented the most important information in the top half of your resume, you can forget about getting the job. Employers allow about 20 seconds to scan each resume they receive.

High school students often are challenged when trying to create their first resume. They often have little or no work experience. Their resume should include at least 5 basic components (their objective, their education, related experience, special skills, and references). Their objective should state what position they are applying for and what value they can add to the company. Their education should state their high school, expected graduation, and their GPA. Related experience should include clubs they have been in. Awards can be listed after related experience. Some students may not have any awards, so this can be left out. Special Skills can include computer and communication skills. References should be listed as available upon request.

Here is a link to a great video on resumes for high school students. Sometimes students find it helpful to see an example of a resume. For more tips go to JobStar Central.

  2. Thanks for including the 5 basic components required in a resume.

Often students leave out this information (or some of it) which puts them at a disadvantage because employers may not select them for an interview due to the missing information which is key in selecting candidates.

  3. Tammy,
I am really amazed how quickly and interviewer can scan a resume. That is why applicants resume should be appealing and catch the eye of the inteviewer on the applicants' qualification for the position. The information is very helpful.
